VELLORE The Fortress of Vellore is situated about 125 kms. west of Madras. Built in this historical town, the Fort is one of the most perfect specimen of military architecture in the South. The 'Ethaladurg' or Land Fort was built by Chinna .... Nayak a subordinate Chief under Sada Sivaraya and Sri Ranga Maharaj, the Vijaynagar Kings in the third quarter of the 16th century AD. The Sultan of Bijapur seized Vellore by about the middle of the 17th century. In 1676 AD the Fort was captured by the Marathas who were in turn ousted by Daud Khan of Delhi in 1708 AD. The Fort was under the charge of Dost Ali, Nawab of Carnatic who gifted it in 1710 AD to his son-in-law, whose son Mohammed Ali kept the Fort as a stronghold for nearly 20 years. In 1760 AD the Fort was occupied by an English garrison, and finally after the fall of Srirangapatnam and the death of Tipu Sultan, the English kept Tipu's sons and daughters in captivity in Vellore Fort. The fortification consists of a main rampart broken at irregular intervals by round towers and rectangular projections. The main walls are built of massive granite stones surrounded by a broad moat fed with water by sub-terranian drains from the Suryagunta tank. Sripuram Golden Temple
Sripuram Golden Temple
A Mahalakshmi temple called 'Sripuram' and made of more than a tonne of pure gold will glitter and gleam under the sun on August 24 when it is unveiled for consecration by the Sri Narayani Peetam headed by a 31-year-old godman who calls himself Narayani Amma. Devotees hail the temple as one of the wonders of the world and say that it is the only temple covered fully with gold.First the coppersmiths set to work creating a copper base on the temple structure with engravings and etchings before the gold, beaten into nine layers of foils, was draped around it. The sanctum sanctorum will hold the deity of Mahalakshmi made of stone granite, but covered with gold kavacham (adornments).
Sri Margapandeswarar Temple
Location :
In the Chennai-Bangalore highway, after Vellore bypass, proceed for another 10 Km till a place called Sedhuvalai and turn right for Virinchipuram. The temple is about a km from the Sedhuvalai junction.Significance:
- 1300 years old temple-the oldest and the biggest temple of Vellore district.
- Gowri Devi, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Sriharan had worshipped here.
- The temple is famous for its prahara walls and the sculptures.
- Aadhi Shankarar had done the Beejakshara Pradhishtai to the Simha theertham of the temple.
- Arunachala Puranam, Siva Rahasiyam, Kanchi puranam and many other holy books have described this temple.
Legend :
Lord Brahma was born as Shivasarma here in a priest family. When Shivsarma’s father died at his early days, Shivsarma was to undertake the pooja responsibilities as a small boy. Shivasarma’s relatives had planned to take away the priest’s rights and land from them and so they warned that his rights and land will be taken away, if he does not perform the pooja when his turn comes up. Shivasarma’s mother prayed to Margabandeeswar and He appeared in her dream. It was the last Saturday night of the Karthigai month. The next morning, Shivasarma took bath in the Brahma theertham and Lord Shiva came as an elderly person and conducted the Upanayanam, Brahmopadhesam and Shiva Dikshai to Shivasarma and disappeared as Mahalingam in the temple tank bund. The small boy was then paraded on an elephant with the holy water pot and the temple door opened automatically to everyone’s surprise. As if he was very experienced in the pooja procedures, he conducted the pooja activities to Swarna Ganapathy and while attempting to do the abhisheham for the Margabandheeswarar, as a small boy, he was unable to reach the head of the lingam. He then submitted his inability to Lord Shiva.Dhanabalan, a Kundala desa pepper merchant lost his loads to thieves. He prayed to Lord Shiva and He came as a soldier on a horse and not only retrieved the pepper loads but also accompanied Dhanabalan till Kanchipuram. Due to this He is called ‘Vazhi Thunai Nathar’ in Tamil and Margabandu in Sanscrit (Marga meaning way and Bandhu meaning company)
This temple is also known as ‘Baskara Kshetram’ because the Sun God is said to worship the linga when its rays fall on it in the month of Panguni; The name of the place as Virinchipuram came from the legend that the temple was worshipped by Brahma, i.e., Virinchi; The theertham of this temple is said to be produced by Gowri devi and so, this place is also known as Gowripuram; Vishnupuram and Margabandheeswaram are also the other names of the place.
Worship Benefits :
- Since Lord Shiva of this temple protected the pepper merchant Dhanabalan, the business people can have this Lord Shiva as the protector for their business.
- The childless couples take dip in all the three theerthams of the temple, stay overnight with the wet cloth to receive the Lord in their dream and get the boon of a child.
- Since Lord Shiva had conducted the Upanayanam and Dikshai to Lord Brahma here, this is a holy place to have Upanayanams, to get Dikshai and to start education
- Since Lord Shiva of this temple protected the pepper merchant Dhanabalan, the business people can have this Lord Shiva as the protector for their business.
- The last sunday of the Karthigai month is considered very auspicious since on that day, Lord Shiva appeared as an elderly person and conducted Upanayanam for Lord Brahma as Shivasarma.
- By worshipping here, people get their marriage obstacles removed and get their marriages conducted here.

It was a daily duty for Renukadevi to Make a pot out of fresh mud and fetch water for Saint Jamadhakni's Pooja. One day, she saw the reflection of a Kandharva on the water.

She stood mesimerised by his beauty for a spilit of a second. The mud pot dissolved in the river . She tried again and again but invain. She realised her mistake and told her husband that an animal chased her and so she could'nt bring water. But the saint who guessed the real happenings, called out for his first four sons and asked them to cut off their mother's head. They all refused and saint cursed them and called his last son Parasuraman to do the duty. Parasuraman asked for two boons from his father and later took his Mother
In great distress, he took the heads to his father. According to his granted boons, he brought his brother and mother back to life. But in confussion, he fixed his mothers head on the Arundathi girl body.
Hence forth the deity was named Mariamman and the place Vettuvanam. A farmer who cultivated the land accidentally dropped the spade on the deity. Blood poured out like a river. A divine voice from the sky said '' I am Ellaiamman'' and a temple was constructed in the place. Though the time and year cannot be judged precisely, it said that in 1961, this temple was one among the 2500 temples in Tamilnadu.
Renukadevi to the forest to chop off her head, He chased her mother who ran for life and she hid behind a Arundathi girl, who was cutting woods and begged for mercy. Parasuraman warned the girl, but she did not oblige. In the heights of abger Parasuraman chopped both heads together.

This place has an important legend behind. This is the place where Renuka Devi's head was cut off by Parasuramar at the behest of his father Sage Jamathgini. Padavedu Renugambal is very popular but this is the place the actual incident took place. Very sacred indeed.

It is considered that if you stay for 3 nights at Kanchi, you get salvation but here if you stay just one night, you get salvation.

Indhran’s Brahma harthi dhosham got cleared here. When there was a fight between Saraswathi and Lakshmi on who is bigger, Brahma declared Lakshmi is bigger. So Saraswathi deserted Brahma. When Brahma conducted an yagna, Saraswathi refused to join him. So Brahma married another lady called Savithri and conducted the Yagna. Then he prayed to Lord Narayan and He just lied across the Palar river in 3 places to stop the flood. The places are Pallikondan (called Vadavarangam), Thiruparkadal and Yadhothkari at Kanchipuram. Temple: Temple is inside a fort like structure. People getting married at this temple will get all the 16 types of wealth.
This temple is said to have built by Vijayanagara Kings during 5th Century.
Other deities of the temple like Lord Rama, Garuda, etc., have been built at
various stages by many kings who ruled here. But Lord Ranganathar is said to
be the Aadhi Moolavar which was excavated from the banks of the river and
built by Vijayanagara Kings and Sambuvarayars.
Situated on the river bank, in an ancient village with serene atmosphere, Sri Ranganathar temple stands tall, blessing many generations.
Festivals like Vaikunda Ekadasi are celebrated well here. Though so ancient and rare of its kind, this temple is in the state of neglect now

Padavedu Temple
Padavedu is a Pilgrimage centre with many ancient temples and will need at
least 2 days to cover all of them. It is situated in the Vellore-Polur
route, centrally among Vellore, Polur and Arani at 20 - 25 km from all these
three places. All that is there in this village are beautiful ancient
temples and lush green fields. Padavedu is a small village in between
Vellore and Tiruvannamalai.Probably the only place where there is a temple
in the middle of a banana and paddy field
During 12-14th Centuries the Sambuvarayar chieftains ruled this area under
the patronage of the Pandyas. For a short time they became independent of
Pandyas and subsequently they came under the rule of Kempagowda. During
their reign, Sambuvarayas rendered great service to art and religion. These
temples were built at various points of time, but most of the improvements
and decorations appear to have been done when the Sambuvarayar came under
the sway of the Vijayanagar empire. Most of these temples excepting the hill
temples were submerged in sand due to the sandstorm and they were discovered
in 1993. The Renukambal trust (owned by TVS) maintains these temples in a
clean and beautiful fashion.
