Have a Close View of Mars This Evening at Vellore

The district science centre here has made elaborate arrangements to help public view planet Mars that would come closer to earth between 7 pm and 8 pm on April 9. A communication from the centre said, a telescope had been placed at the centre to view Mars.
The time between 7 pm and 8 pm  was the practically advantageous time to observe the planet as it would be closer to earth. It would be fully illuminated by the sun and would appear larger and brighter. It would be visible throughout the night. The planets which lie within the earth’s  orbit are called inferior planets and those which lie beyond the earth’s orbit are superior planets.
On Wednesday, Mars will be closer to earth at a distance of 9.2-crore-km away. It would be positioned in the constellation of Virgo.
On Wednesday, the apparent angular size of the red planet would grow to 15 arc seconds. Earth- based telescopes can capture Mars best when it is at opposition. Such views would reveal the polar ice caps and the dark markings that appear and vanish with seasons.
